The knees may actually be a leftover adaptation to discourage webbed-foot dinosaurs from eating the tree – or at least that’s the least debunked hypothesis we have at this time. The knees are probably not pneumatophores at all, as they lack aerenchyma and lenticles. The mechanical stability hypothesis is also brought into question since cypress in deeper water actually lack knees.
